ABSTRACT
THE ROLE OF SUSTAINABLE INVESTING IN MODERN PORTFOLIOS
This study investigates the role of sustainable investing in modern portfolios with objectives: (1) to assess the impact of sustainable investing on portfolio performance; (2) to identify the strategies for incorporating sustainability into investment decisions; (3) to understand the challenges in sustainable investing. A survey design is justified for this study to collect quantitative data. Using Taro Yamane's formula, a sample size of 310 respondents from Lagos is selected, representing a mix of retail and institutional investors. An ESG-focused investment fund is chosen as the case study due to its commitment to sustainable investing. The reliability coefficient score for the survey instrument is 0.88. Findings indicate that sustainable investing can achieve competitive returns while promoting environmental and social goals. Strategies such as integrating ESG criteria, impact investing, and shareholder advocacy are highlighted. It is recommended that investors incorporate sustainability into their investment decisions, use ESG metrics, and engage with companies on sustainability issues to enhance portfolio performance and contribute to positive societal impact.
